Inadequate paint preparation
A ceramic coating preserves the condition of the paint – it does not improve it. If you coat paint with swirls, water spots, or ingrained dirt, you will permanently seal those in.
Many skip decontamination because it is time-consuming. This backfires: The coating adheres poorly, the surface remains uneven, and the durability decreases.
How to do it right
Thorough wash → chemical decontamination with iron remover and tar remover → mechanical decontamination (clay bar) → paint correction if necessary → degreasing with IPA or pre-cleaner. Only then apply the coating.

Application in direct sunlight or on warm paint
Ceramic coatings react to humidity and temperature. On warm paint or in direct sunlight, the coating dries too quickly – before it can be evenly distributed. The result: high spots, uneven layer thickness, difficult-to-remove residues.
On 40°C hot paint in summer, you often have less than 30 seconds before the coating starts to flash.
How to do it right
Always work in the garage or in the shade. Optimal ambient temperature: 15–25°C. Check the paint by hand beforehand – it should feel cool. Never apply in direct sunlight.

Too large working areas at once
If you coat an entire hood at once, you are working against time. By the time the second half is applied, the first half has already cured too much – high spots are pre-programmed. Especially in warmer temperatures, this is a common beginner's mistake.
How to do it right
Maximum 40 × 40 cm per working area. Proceed section by section. Better to have more sections with a clean result than fewer with high spots.

Incorrect flash-off time – wiping off too early or too late
The flash-off time is one of the most critical factors in DIY ceramic coating. Wiping off too early: The coating does not adhere properly, the layer density is low, and the durability is significantly reduced. Wiping off too late: The coating has cured too much – difficult-to-remove residues will form.
How to do it right
The flash-off time depends on the system, temperature, and humidity – typically 30–120 seconds. Wait for the so-called "rainbow effect": When the coating shows a slight iridescence, it is the right time to wipe off. When in doubt, it is better to do a small test area first.

Overdosing the product
More is not better. A too thick layer of ceramic coating dries unevenly, is harder to wipe off, and increases the risk of streaks and residues. A thin, even layer is completely sufficient – the chemistry does the rest.
A ceramic coating forms a protective matrix in micrometers – not millimeters. More product means more problems, not more protection.
How to do it right
3–4 drops per applicator pad are sufficient for a 40 × 40 cm section. Wet the pad evenly, do not overload. It is better to reapply more often than once too much.
Mistake №6
Wrong cloth or too much pressure when polishing
If you polish with a rough, dirty or too fluffy microfiber, you risk scratches, streaks or uneven spots. Too much pressure during polishing will rub off the coating again before it has properly bonded.
How to do it right
Use clean, short-pile microfiber – dedicated to coatings, never used for other purposes. Minimal pressure, controlled circular motion. Regularly turn the cloth so that a clean side is always on the paint.

Letting the vehicle get wet too early
After application, the final cross-linking phase begins – the chemical curing process that can take days. If the vehicle gets wet within the first 24 hours, this process is interrupted. Water spots can permanently etch into the still soft coating.
How to do it right
Store dry for at least 24 hours after application. For the first 5–7 days, no aggressive chemicals, no car wash, no rain if possible. Full chemical curing can take up to 2 weeks, depending on the product.

Polishing oils and greases prevent the ceramic coating from forming a clean bond with the clear coat. This step is most often skipped and has the greatest impact on durability.
